Tatra Mountains

Countries like Poland & Slovakia are not the destination one hears when one talks about holiday destinations. Although once there was a time when areas of both countries where known as popular health&ski resorts. Let me welcome you in the Tatra mountains.

First destination Zakopane

The town of Zakopane is known as the winter capital of Poland. Where I expected to discover a small winter village, I was totally surprised by the amount of tourism. For several nights we booked a cute looking apartment in châlet style. The village is surrounded by several ski slopes and is known for its unique architecture. A perfect base for anyone who loves to explore the Tatra Mountains. For anyone who loves to enjoy a more peaceful area I would recommend the Slovakian side of the mountains.

Zakopane style

Zakopane even comes with it’s own style, known as the “Zakopane Style”. An architectural style that is known for its wooden structures and woodcarving. Until today one can still discover the beautiful villas that were built in this very charming almost fairytale-like style. The perfect example and also one of the main attractions of Zakopane is the chapel at Jaszczurowka.

Which places to visit in Zakopane - Defender Bar

Where to go for drinks&food? RmariusB got you covered. If you consider a hotel in the center, I highly recommend the Aries Hotel. For food&drinks I gladly did my research. On top of the skislopes (either to be reached by car, skilift or small train) one has to visit The Defender Bar. For the winterseason the Baken Bar teamed up with Defender to create a marvelous hotspot on the skislopes; The Defender Bar.

Which places to visit in Zakopane - Ziebowka

Zakopane has a lot of restaurants to offer. But for everyone who wants to escape the hustle of the city, make sure to visit Ziebowka. Located 5 km outside of the citycenter Ziebowka has everything to offer, delicious local dishes, friendly staff, a dreamy interior & beautiful surroundings. Inspired by their style? Lucky you, the restaurant offers a wonderful selection of pillows, plaids and carpets. Perhaps a bit highly priced, but in my opinion worth the money. My favourite stylingtrick I learned here, to use a rug as wallcovering instead of rolling it out on the floor.

How to get there

The Tatra Mountains also known as Tatry form a natural border between Poland & Slovakia. We started this trip in Budapest, which is a 5 hour drive. If you come by plane the airport of Cracow is only 1,5 hour drive away. Soon part II of the Tatra Mountains will follow, where I will highlight the Slovakian part of this area.
